Wool Benefits

Wool is a natural fibre. It has evolved to produce a fabric that has become one of the most effective natural forms of all-weather protection known to man.

Every year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a renewable fibre source. Woolgrowers actively work to improve efficiency and care for natural resources, endeavouring to make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.

Fully Recyclable

Discarded synthetic textiles ending up in landfill sites is a major global problem and here, wool offers a postive alternative. Wool naturally decomposes into soil releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth. By choosing long-lasting, readily recyclable woollen garments over other options, you can reduce the quantity of textiles that go to waste.

Neutralises VOCs

Not only does this remarkable fibre perform consistently over many years, but it also acts as an air purifier to reduce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) that are released into the atmosphere by commonly used building products. These toxins are absorbed into the very fibre of the fabric and not re-emitted for decades.

Breathability

Wool fabrics have low thermal conductivity and, therefore, feel warm to the touch in cold weather and cool in warm weather. It remains comfortable in hot humid conditions, where a man-made product can feel clammy. This is because wool has the ability to absorb moisture vapour without feeling wet and to release it as conditions change.

Hypo-allergenic

In these days of increasing allergies, wool even offers hypo-allergenic properties. It is naturally resistant to mould, mildew and dust mites, all of which can trigger allergic reactions.

Appearance

Retention

As its primary function is to protect the body of a sheep to the surrounding environment, wool fibres have a natural protective outer layer. This helps to prevent any marks or stains from being absorbed, so the dirt sits of the surface and is easily removed.

Durable

Wool is a naturally durable fibre. Wool garments can stay in circulation for a relatively long period of time, and this reduces their environmental footprint. Research shows that woollen products have the potential for several ‘lifetimes’, lasting 20-30 years and often longer.

Elasticity

Wool fibres have a built in ‘memory’ that allows them to recover to their original shape even after being stretched over 30%. This characteristic keeps wool fabrics from crushing and wrinkling so that it always looks its best and will maintain its appearance for far longer than a less expensive fibre.

Flame Retardant

The fact that wool is highly flame resistant had made it a favourite choice for furnishing fabrics. It is natural flame resistance means that it does not melt, is difficult to ignite and has a low spread of both flame and heat release. These properties occur naturally but if necessary can be enhanced by the flame resistant treatments to pass even the most severe specifications.
